A Bitcoin seed begins with entropy. Dice let you supply that input through a physical process instead of relying only on a device’s internal random-number sources.

What are Bitcoin dice rolls?
Bitcoin dice rolls are physical D6 results used as entropy when creating a wallet seed. In COLDCARD’s dice-only workflow, the signing device processes the ordered sequence without exposing it to a phone or laptop.

Why use 100 dice?
One hundred dice collect a complete sequence in one throw instead of requiring 100 separate throws. Each die produces one visible result from 1 through 6 for direct entry on COLDCARD.

How can the result be checked?
COLDCARD documents the SHA-256 and BIP-39 steps. Advanced users can privately record the exact entry order and reproduce the calculation in a suitable offline environment using the published tools.

Prepare privately
Use current, verified firmware. Work somewhere without cameras or connected devices watching the dice or screen.

Roll honestly
Throw the dice on a large, flat surface. Do not invent, improve, or repeat convenient results.

Enter every result
Choose the COLDCARD dice-only seed option, then enter each top face once. For a 24-word seed, use all 100 dice.

Back up and test
Record the resulting seed words offline, protect the backup, and complete COLDCARD’s recovery test before receiving funds.
One ideal D6 result represents log2(6), or about 2.585 bits. A sequence of 100 results has 6100 possible combinations—approximately 2258.5.
COLDCARD applies SHA-256 to the exact ASCII sequence of entered results, then maps the output to BIP-39 seed words. You can reproduce both steps using the published tools.

How many dice rolls are needed for a Bitcoin seed?
Current COLDCARD documentation specifies at least 50 D6 results for its 12-word dice-only workflow and 99 results for its 24-word dice-only workflow. This set contains 100 dice so you can collect all results in one throw.
How much entropy does one D6 result provide?
One ideal six-sided die result represents log2(6), or approximately 2.585 bits. One hundred independent D6 results have 6100 possible ordered sequences, approximately 2258.5.
Are the dice results secret?
Yes. In a dice-only seed workflow, the ordered dice results can recreate the seed. Keep them away from cameras, microphones, connected devices, and other people. Never photograph, upload, reuse, or share them.
Can I choose or repeat convenient numbers?
No. Roll every die honestly and enter the results exactly as they landed. Human-selected patterns are not a substitute for random physical rolls.
Do dice replace the rest of wallet security?
No. Secure seed generation is one part of a complete setup. Use current firmware, verify addresses on-device, protect and test backups, and consider a passphrase or multi-vendor multisig when appropriate for your threat model and recovery ability.
